July 2015 - Yellowstone

Whenever Theresa comes, we put our planners together on the first day and she packs our schedule full of fun things. I hadn't been to Yellowstone since I was like 10, even though we live pretty dang close to it now. I was glad that Theresa wanted to go, especially because I get nervous about doing things like this by myself. The kids were all pretty good during all the driving. We went back three days I believe, and camped at Chris's parents land that's about 45 minutes from the West Yellowstone entrance. We hit all of the main attractions and also drove up and around. We took turns pushing the stroller and I gave piggy backs through part of it.

I started doing 21 Day Fix with a support group around the middle of July. I worked out every single day in the camper except the last day, when we were trying to pack up during a giant rainstorm. While we were at the campground, we built fires and rode the four wheeler that Greg and Michelle so nicely left for us. It made exploring up the mountains so much easier, and the kids were excited to see antelope.

We also went through Quake Lake and the Ghost Village, where all the cabins that were picked up by the flood landed. It was a little bit creepy! I was grateful for the GPS so we could get around easier. We packed food every day in a cooler and either ate as we were driving or stopped at a spot that looked like it would be good for a picnic.

We saw several deer and elk, 2 bears, and a herd of bison. We had excellent timing with the bears-- we had driven through a crowd of cars and people, stopped and asked what was going on, and were told it was a possible bear sighting. We kept going. On our way back through, we stopped because someone pulled out and we got their spot. A very nice guy let me borrow his binoculars to see the bears that were way off by the trees. We didn't even have to wait for hours for them to come around. I had wanted to see a bison, but didn't have much luck til the end. We saw one way down in a field, so pulled over when we could and got out and walked over to the side of the road. We were taking pictures when he decided to start walking toward us, so we started walking back to the car, then started running back to the car. It was pretty crazy. Connor tripped and fell in the long grass and was yelling for help. We all scrambled as fast as we could to get in the car, and the bison followed us there and walked right past our car. It was a little bit intense! I'm so glad we got to see it, though! We later saw a whole herd, so I definitely got my buffalo fix!

This was my favorite place by far that we saw in Yellowstone. I think it was called the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone or something? It had beautiful yellow cliffs and a giant waterfall. These pictures seriously do not do it justice. I want to go back there with just Chris and hike all the little trails around this place. It wasn't possible with 2 adults and 5 kids! It was so breathtaking. I could have stayed there and stared all day. It made me pretty nervous, though, with the small rock fence that dropped straight down. I had a hard time even letting my kids get close.

The campground was so beautiful from every angle. It was nice to be up there without any loud neighbors. It was perfect.

Theresa loves the Grand Teton Mountains. We drove past them on the way home and stopped probably 8 times to take a picture! It was cloudy, and each time the clouds moved a bit more we would stop. They really are neat to look at. I'm grateful that Theresa comes and gets me out of my comfort zone and shows me all these neat places!
